Woman daughter flown off Mount St Helens

first_imgA Texas woman and her 18-year-old daughter were helped off Mount St. Helens by helicopter Wednesday morning after the woman fell off a trail, slid down a snow slope and was unable to continue, rescuers said. The fall resulted in only minor injuries, said Tom McDowell, assistant chief with North Country Emergency Medical Service. But the slide left Nancy Allen of Katy, Texas, in a precarious position on the south side of the mountain, McDowell said. The call for help came around 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office. Allen, 48, and her daughter had reached the summit earlier Tuesday and were on their way back down, McDowell said. Once responders with the Volcano Rescue Team reached the two at about 6,100 feet, they spent the next several hours helping them make their way down.By 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, Allen decided she would hire a private helicopter to take her and her daughter off the mountain. The helicopter arrived at about 6:30 a.m. and transported the two to safety, according to the sheriff’s office.last_img
