Whistler BC happy to help Calgary host Olympics

first_imgThe Mayor of Whistler is on board with helping to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, if Calgary decides it wants to piggyback on the B.C. community’s facilities.Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden said lending its ski jumps and other winter sports facilities to Vancouver during the 2010 games increased Whistler’s profile internationally, and it continues to host World Cup events as a result. She said construction for the Olympics also left a legacy in the resort town, so there’s just one thing missing.“Our athletes’ village, several years ago, was converted over to resident restricted housing. That was always the intention. So, if there was going to be any issue it would be in respect to housing the athletes,” she said.Wilhelm-Morden said her staff has spoken with the City of Calgary, but she looks forward to meeting with Mayor Naheed Nenshi in council if Calgary decides to bid for the games.last_img
