When Shikhar Dhawan is determined, no bowler in the world can stop him: Ganguly

first_imgFormer India captain and Delhi Capitals advisor Sourav Ganguly rated Shikhar Dhawan among the best limited-overs batsmen in the country and backed the India opener to play a crucial role for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise in the business end of the tournament.Ganguly heaped rich praise on Dhawan, saying it’s difficult to stop the left-handed opener once he is set and in full flow. Ganguly’s comments came after Dhawan smashed a 63-ball 97 not-out as he anchored Delhi Capitals’ successful chase of 179 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.Dhawan was getting stars in IPL 2019 but the seasoned India opener had been struggling to convert them into big ones until Friday. At the Eden Gardens Dhawan started slow and rode his luck on a couple of occasions. However, once he got his eye in, Dhawan took the KKR bowlers to the cleaners.Dhawan’s timing was spot on and he found gaps with fine precision as Delhi Capitals gunned down the target with seven balls and as many wickets to spare. Dhawan’s match-winning knock helped Delhi Capitals move into the top four of the IPL 2019 points table.”He batted like Shikhar Dhawan today. I have always said there are four best players in ODI cricket — Dhawan, MS [Dhoni], Virat [Kohli] and Rohit [Sharma]. So he batted like one. Fantastic batting. When he gets set and gets in, he’s unstoppable,” Ganguly told IPLT20.com after Delhi’s win in Kolkata.”We were desperate for Shikhar this season. When he knew that he was available, I said whatever it costs, Shikhar Dhawan has to play for us.advertisementWinning mentality GabbarDilliwalon, how good was @SDhawan25’s knock last night? #KKRvDC #ThisIsNewDelhi #DelhiCapitals pic.twitter.com/n9xhGPYP9uDelhi Capitals (@DelhiCapitals) April 13, 2019″All I expect of him is determination. When he’s determined, no bowler in the world can stop him. It’s great to have him. More importantly, this is the business end of the tournament. He’s been in teams which have won IPL in the past. So hopefully, he can turn it around for the Delhi Capitals,” Ganguly added.Meanwhile, Dhawan said he is happy to have two legendary names in Ganguly and head coach Ricky Ponting in the dressing room and that he is always looking for opportunities to learn from them.”We have got Dada [Ganguly] as well as Ricky. Both were great captains in their era. The backing that bring to the team is totally amazing. The way they have backed me is totally amazing. That’s what I look up to and learn from them. I always keep asking Dada about his man-management skills… as to how he used to handle the boys,” Dhawan said.Dhawan’s 97 bigger than a hundred: GangulyDhawan missed out on his maiden IPL hundred by just three runs. The left-hander had the opportunity to get to the landmark when he was on strike with Delhi Capitals needing 12 from 12.Dhawan though took a couple of singles in the 19th over only to see his stike partner get the big hits and finish the game with seven balls to spare. Both Ganguly and Dhawan stressed that a match-winning 97 was more special than the hundred that the Delhi opener had missed.”I would have loved to have a hundred. At the same time, team goal was more important. It was important for me to be there till the end. For me, this 97 is as good as a hundred. That doesn’t make any difference to me,” Dhawan said.Ganguly added: “Absolutely, it’s bigger than a hundred when you play and win. He’s got 16 one-day hundreds in 120-odd matches. It’s a remarkable record. He will get many more.”Also Read | Pant gives cake facial to Dhawan, Zoravar as DC celebrate big win over KKRAlso Read | Sourav Ganguly on MS Dhoni’s on-field outburst at umpires: Everyone is humanlast_img
