DONEGAL STUDENTS LEFT SHOCKED BY SCIENCE PROGRAMME!

first_imgMore than 500 students fro across Donegal travelled to the Balor Theatre, Ballybofey yesterday to participate in EirGrid’s schools science programme – ‘Understanding Electricity – From Power Station to PlayStation.’ The dynamic, vibrant and interactive show is based on the electricity module of the junior cycle science curriculum, with particular emphasis placed on practical experience and audience participation.It aims to help students develop an appreciation of the impact that electricity has on our lives and environment. The programme was devised by EirGrid, the state-owned operator of the national transmission network, as part of the company’s support programme for Dublin City of Science 2012.Upon arrival, students got a view a number of electricity related experiments in the ‘Lobby Lab’ before EirGrid engineers presented a 45 minute show where they will demonstrate a number of experiments including; static electricity, batteries and circuits, electromagnetism, renewable energy and transmission.Speaking about the programme, Aidan Corcoran, Grid25 Manager said, “This was a great opportunity for the EirGrid team as well as the schoolchildren of Donegal.“EirGrid has some of brightest engineering minds in the country working in our organisation and we are excited to be able to be in a position to include Donegal in this highly innovative national programme.’ Students from a variety of schools attended including -St. Catherine’s Vocational School, Killibegs, Deele College, Raphoe, Abbey Vocational School, Donegal, Carndonagh Vocational School, Donegal, Finn Valley College and St Columba’s, Stranorlar, Errigal College.
