Homeless man jailed

first_imgA homeless man on Friday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Magistrate Annette Singh to answer to simple larceny.Mahase Sarjoo told the court he has no fixed place of abode, and pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that between April 12 and 13 at Cowan Street, Kingston, Georgetown, he broke and entered a building belonging to St John’s Association and stole therefrom two blankets, three stand fans, six drinking glasses, one TEX gas cylinder and a percolator, all valued at ,000.Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that at around 09:00h, Edghill (only name given) a security guard at the building, while making his regular checks around the building discovered that the building had been broken into.The defendant was seen in the compound with a bulky bag on his back and the gas bottle in his hand, police were summoned and the defendant was taken to the Brickdam Police Station.Magistrate Singh sentenced him to six months imprisonment.Meanwhile in another matter, a Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara man was refused bail by Magistrate Singh on a theft charge.Vishal Jose on April 13, at Alexander Village stole from Hiralall Ramgopaul ,000 in cash.The prosecution revealed that at about 13:00h Ramgopaul was at the Houston Fishery seeking employment, when he contacted the defendant who was seated on a boat to enquire the whereabouts of his boss.According to Prosecutor Grant, the boss was not around at the time but the defendant opted to take Ramgopaul to him when he pushed his hands in the virtual complainant’s pocket, stole his money, and tried to escape.An alarm was raised, and public spirited persons give chase and caught the defendant and handed him over to the Ruimveldt Police station.Jose pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to six months imprisonment.last_img
