New Court Docs Reveal Text Messages, Plans of Mar-A-Lago Intruder

first_imgThe Chinese national who was convicted last week of lying in order to gain access into Mar-A-Lago was apparently more interested in President Trump’s real estate holdings than his political life, according to a string of text messages released on Thursday. In the translated messages that 33-year-old wealthy investment counselor Yujing Zhang sent to her travel agent before Secret Service agents arrested her last March, she writes:“I was thinking that since Trump himself was in real estate business so that perhaps we could have something to talk about,” Zhang wrote to Chinese travel agent Charles Lee, who organized her trip. She adds, “In terms of politics … it’s not like that I really .. really understand much of the struggling relationships among the political dignitaries. We don’t get involved in election or political relations. I — I personally don’t want to get involved in — involved in this situation. Get it?”Lee assures Zhang that there could be other opportunities to go to an event attended by Trump, adding that the event she wanted to attend was cancelled just after Special Counsel Robert Mueller sent his report on the Russia investigation to Attorney General William Barr. Lee explains, “But the Trump’s event is cancelled for the time being, mainly because of the Russian investigation. The investigation report says Trump did not involve. Trump now is about to punish and take revenge on those who wrongly accused him, including the media. So, his events are temporarily put on hold for the time being. If there are other events that we can go, that .. I will let you know. I will make arrangements. No worries. But this is none right no, none right now. Huh.”Zhang responded only when Lee asked if she was more interested in real estate forums. To that, Zhang wrote back: “Right. Right Right.”Other evidence that was also filed in court records on Thursday includes a copy of the travel agreement between Lee and Zhang. The $20,000 package was to include round-trip airfare from Shanghai to the U.S. for seven days, with stops in Palm Beach, Washington, D.C.. and New York City. Zhang was supposed to visit the White House and Capitol Hill in Washington, in addition to Wall Street, the Statue of Liberty, the World Trade Center and the U.S. Stock Exchange in New York. She would also receive an “Honorary Diploma in Peace,” from the United Nations China, which is identified as a nonprofit organization. She was also supposed to receive a “U.S.-China Friendship Missionary Honorary Certificate,” to be issued by President Trump’s Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to the travel contract. That contract was part of the Chinese communist government’s “Belt and Road Initiatives” and “Go Global” attempts to promote China’s role in international infrastructure development and investment.Zhang also write to Lee, “Let’s say, after the White House tour, can you organize something like meeting with the legislators on that day, for example. Er, … some Congresspeople .. . or the Congress,” she wrote. “Have a chat with some of them, or watch their … or watch their section, something like that. Can you organize an activity like that?”However, she was not interested in Lee’s suggestion to attend an event in Detroit featuring former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Instead, Zhang told Lee to cancel the trip, opting to pay $2,000 for a plane ticket and booking a room at the Red Roof Inn for one night, followed by a stay at the Colony Hotel on Palm Beach. When she appeared at Mar-a-Lago on March 30, Zhang claimed she was attending a “United Nations Friendship Event” between China and the U.S., according to federal agents. However, no such event was scheduled.Since her arrest, Zhang has been held at the Broward County jail. She represented herself at her three-day trial, and is scheduled to be sentenced on November 22, on charges of lying to a federal agent and gaining access to a restricted building. If convicted, she faces up to six years in prison.last_img read more

MH370: more possible Black Box pings detected

first_imgOcean Shield has reacquired what is believed to be the black box pingers from Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 which went missing on March 8.Joint Agency Co-Ordination Centre chief Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston announced that the Ocean Shield re-acquired the signals yesterday afternoon and held it for 5 minutes 32 seconds and again last night and held it for 7 minutes. The Ocean Shield has acquired the signal four times since Saturday. However Air Chief Marshal Houston said that while this was a “great lead” the search team needed to sight wreckage for absolute confirmation. The next stage is to triangulate the fixes and then launch the Bluefin 21 autonomous underwater vehicle to scan the bottom which is 4500m deep.“Hopefully in a matter of days we may be able to find wreckage on the bottom” said Air Chief Marshall Houston. He said that they have no idea how far the debris may have travelled but the search area for debris is now “a more manageable 75000 square kms.”The search for MH370 has intensified underwater and in the air yesterday. An Australian P3 Orion is deploying in the search area listening devices that have a hydrophone that is tethered on 300m of cable and sends any signals back to the plane. The towed pinger locator deployed by Ocean Shield is operated by a team from its maker Phoenix International.General manager Jim Gibson said the team was cautiously optimistic about the pings picked up.However, it was revealed the frequency detected was 33kHz, which is below the 37.5kHz the pingers are designed to emit. This shift could be attributed to the ocean depth of 4500m, a failing battery or damage to the unit and is within the range of past experience with the beacons.Ocean Shield also deployed runabouts with navy divers to investigate debris in the search area.Adding to evidence the search is in the right area, Inmarsat told London’s Daily Telegraph that the signals Ocean Shield recorded were in the area where the Boeing 777 made its final electronic contact with a satellite at 8.19am on March 8.AirlineRatings has learnt that a number of countries tracked MH370 across South-East Asia.Sources in Singapore confirmed the plane flew around Indonesia, possibly to try to avoid military radar but was picked up by radar in several countries.Sources suggest military intelligence had helped refine the flight plan calculations of the multinational search team.On Monday Australia’s Defence Minister David Johnston said the multinational team was “flat out trying to enhance the leads and to deliver up something more tangible”.Commenting on relationships between the multinational team, Senator Johnston said the co-operation was “absolutely first- class”.“This is a herculean task, ” he said.“We have at least several days of intense action ahead of us.“We are throwing everything at this.”last_img read more

Washington state is allied with BC on Trans Mountain pipeline governor

first_imgVANCOUVER – The governor of Washington says his state is “allied” with British Columbia in questioning whether the Trans Mountain pipeline should be expanded. The project poses a threat to waters off the West Coast, which Washington residents view as a treasure, and the state is looking at marine safety laws that would help mitigate the impact of a tanker spill, Gov. Jay Inslee said Friday at a meeting with B.C. Premier John Horgan and officials from Oregon and California.“We are hopeful that the premier’s efforts to allow the voices of his citizens to be listened to will be successful, because it is very much in common with our citizens,” Inslee said, adding that residents in his state recently rejected proposals for both coal and oil ports.Inslee commended British Columbia for leadership on climate protection. But he said Trans Mountain may be a federal policy that “shoots Canada in the foot” and reverses some of the work the province has done.Alberta and B.C. have been locked in a battle over the future of Kinder Morgan’s $7.4-billion plan to triple the capacity of the Trans Mountain pipeline, which runs from Edmonton to Burnaby, B.C.Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna acknowledged Friday there are differences over the pipeline, but she said it was approved by Ottawa after extensive reviews and it will be built.“We did that review by increasing engagement with communities, by meaningful consultation with Indigenous Peoples, by looking at the science and the evidence and also looking at the project in the context of our climate plan, and we approved that project,” she said in Victoria.“The project was also approved by the previous B.C. government and we think the project should go ahead.”B.C. is asking the courts to determine if it has jurisdiction to limit how much diluted bitumen can flow through pipelines in the province. The members of the Pacific Coast Collaborative met in Vancouver on Friday to mark its 10th anniversary and agreed to add drug overdoses and trade to the list of issues considered vital to the four jurisdictions. The forum was created in 2008 to encourage joint action on matters like climate change and the environment but the group also wants to confront what Inslee calls the “scourge of substance-use disorders.”A news release from the premier’s office says they are also committed to ending the stigma and discrimination associated with addiction and substance-use disorders.Later on Friday, Horgan announced B.C. will contribute $300,000 towards a study with Washington state on the potential for a high-speed rail line connecting Vancouver, Seattle, Portland and other cities beyond. Washington has approved funding of up to US$1.2 million towards the new study.B.C. says the service could cut travel times between Vancouver and Seattle to about 60 minutes from three hours.Collaboration throughout the Pacific region is particularly important in the current political climate, said Matt Rodriquez, California’s secretary of environmental protection.“To be candid, for those of us in the United States, there’s an absence of leadership in the federal government right now and so it’s incumbent on us to work together and step up and show what we can do between our various governments,” he said.Inslee said that collaboration is evident in the group’s approach to climate change.“On the West Coast, we know that climate change is not a hoax,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what foolishness comes out of the White House. Leaders on the West Coast are united in understanding science in the commitment to clean waters and clean air.”The group is a physical representation of governments working together across borders on critical issues, Horgan said.“I believe we’re demonstrating to North America the commonalities that we have despite artificial boundaries,” he said.“The 49th parallel exists on maps and on globes, but we’ve demonstrated today … that working together, the people who populate this spectacular region have a common purpose. And that is to ensure that our environment is protected so our economy can flourish.”Horgan said his U.S. counterparts understand the urgent need to protect a shared environment and to slow climate change across a region that is home to 55 million people and represents the world’s fifth-largest economy.(Companies in this story: TSX: KML)last_img read more
