Funding dispute could lead to closure of KLM pension fund, scheme warns

first_imgMeanwhile, the pension fund is initiating legal proceedings of its own against the company for having unilaterally cancelled its contract.KLM has said it intends to establish a new pension fund if the current scheme is closed.Manel Vrijenhoek, spokeswoman for KLM, took pains to emphasise that the airline was not looking to save on pension costs.“The company wishes to mitigate the combined, unintended effects of the new financial assessment framework (nFTK) and the low-interest environment,” she said. “This would lead to a disproportionately high additional contribution of probably hundreds of millions, which threatens our operational management.”Vrijenhoek said KLM acknowledged that the additional contribution was part of the arrangement with the unions and the contract with the pension fund. But she argued that the clause in question had been based on the previous financial assessment framework, when the criterion for full indexation was a funding of 105%.“With the introduction of the nFTK last year, the minimum level for full indexation increased to 122%,” she said. As of the end of September, funding of the pilot scheme stood at 115.5%.KLM said a new pension fund would be “very similar” to the existing defined benefit scheme but offer indexation arrangements based on the previous FTK. The €8.3bn pension fund for KLM’s pilots has warned that it will have to close if the Dutch airline terminates its contract with the scheme. In a clarification on its website, the pension fund said it would only continue to manage accrued pension rights, and that the new situation would have an impact on its recovery potential and its ability to grant indexation.KLM and pilot union VNV are locked in a legal battle over whether the airline is required to plug funding gaps that would allow the pension fund to grant full indexation. The VNV is to appeal a recent verdict by the Amsterdam court, which concluded that this obligation does not apply to KLM.last_img read more

Powered by Firework Back in April 2019, former Pakistani international cricketer Shahid Afridi released his autobiography named ‘Game Changer, which had some controversial comments towards former Team India batsman Gautam Gambhir. Now, Gambhir takes to social media to get back to Afridi’s choicest words.Advertisement Image Courtesy: PTI/Times of IslamabadIn his riveting memoir, Shahid Afridi recalled the memories he had with Gambhir, and legendary Aussie spin bowler Shane Warne on the pitch, and also stated that their reactions to sledging were a thing of entertainment to the all rounder. However, the 40 year old heavily criticised Gambhir for having an ‘attitude problem’ and the followings were written about the former Team India opener:Advertisement “He, who has no personality. He, who is barely a character in the great scheme of cricket. He, who has no great records, just a lot of attitude. He, who behaves like he’s a cross between Don Bradman and James Bond.”The remarks have recently gone viral, and Gambhir, now a Bharatiya Janata Party MP, took to Twitter to respond to the allegations from his former cricketing opposition.Advertisement “Someone who doesn’t remember his age how will he remember my records! Chelsea a decent bet for the Champions League despite tough draw

first_imgChelsea are struggling domestically but might well be a decent bet for the Champions League. When it comes to betting on football, sites like BettingNews.com have suggested Liverpool and defending champions Manchester City will again be the front runners for the title.Leicester have been the surprise package so far this season, while Chelsea have found the going tough after a bright start under Frank Lampard. After a cracking spell in which youngsters like Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount took the Premier League by storm, Lampard now has problems to deal with.Chelsea have looked vulnerable at the back all season and their 1-0 loss against Bournemouth was their fourth defeat in their last five league matches – and their third home defeat of the campaign. The Blues are currently fourth but have Tottenham and Manchester United breathing down their necks – so they face a tough battle in their pursuit of a top-four finish.A loss to Spurs in Sunday’s big game would take the north London club above Chelsea in the table, so these are worrying times for Blues fans.New signings expectedWhat could swing things back in Chelsea’s favour is the prospect of new players arriving in January. The Court of Arbitration for Sport lifting the club’s transfer ban means Lampard will now be able to add to his squad.A defensive signing seems like a must and there is every chance that Nathan Ake could be returning to west London.Chelsea inserted a £40m buy-back clause in the deal when Ake was sold to Bournemouth in 2017 and the Dutchman’s performances on the south coast suggest he would be a shrewd January capture. But Lampard is also in the market for attacking players, with Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha and England international Jadon Sancho among Chelsea’s targets. Borussia Dortmund are unlikely to part with Sancho at this stage but Zaha would certainly be an exciting signing – and has made it clear he wants to leave Palace.Returning to MunichImproving the squad would surely improve Chelsea’s chances in the second half of the season – and that includes the Champions League.Lampard’s side have been handed a tough draw in the last 16 in the shape of Bayern Munich. They will be underdogs, but shouldn’t be ruled out.The second leg in Munich will mean a return to the city where Chelsea won the trophy in 2012. Lampard was part of their team that night and will no doubt relish a return. While most betting sites have the likes of Bayern and holders Liverpool among the favourites to lift the trophy in May, betting on Chelsea could well be a shrewd move. The squad has real potential and with one or two signings could yet make it a season to remember. The Danger in Occupying the Middle

first_imgThere are only two real business strategies, and businesses in the middle are being sucked into the gravitational pull of one of these strategies. The first strategy is lowest price, or transactional. To operate this strategy you have to drive costs out of the business. These businesses focus on the efficiency of the transaction with the buyer. They make things fast and cheap. They don’t worry about being better. The second strategy is caring, or consultative. It’s the polar opposite of the first strategy. To operate this strategy, you can’t drive costs out of the business; this strategy requires a greater investment in time, energy, and resources. You might be better and faster, but you can’t be cheaper. Being cheap destroys the strategy.Your clients have to care about whatever it is you sell enough to pay more to obtain it. The Internet makes this easier by allowing you to have direct access to the people who value what you do.The dangerous place to occupy is in the middle. In the middle, you might be a little better than the low price competitors, but you’re not “better” enough to make you worth paying more to obtain. This is how you lose to lower priced competitors. The gravitational pull here is to compete on price, and by doing so, giving up what makes you a little better. You might be a little faster and a little cheaper than the higher-priced, caring, consultative competitors, but not enough to make it worth saving a few bucks to miss out on the better outcomes they produce. It’s difficult to be better. You have try harder. It’s tougher to sell “better” in a world that is increasingly transactional. You have to spend your time with people who value “better” enough to pay for it.If you believe it’s tough selling at a higher price than your competitors, try winning a race to the bottom.last_img read more
