The term “March Madness” has been around for decades. For those of you who have been living under a rock your entire lives and haven’t heard the phrase, it relates to the men’s (and women’s) NCAA college basketball tournament, where millions of money-hungry Americans clutch that invaluable paper bracket while cursing out the backup point guard from Southern Methodist Community College for missing that layup to beat Southeast Oklahoma State in overtime. After the first weekend, however, most people’s brackets have been put through the household paper shredder when your national champion lost to a No. 15 seed by thirty. But, hey, they played tough, right?March Madness can also be related to a college student’s midterm exams, which usually fall right before spring break. Instead of thinking about getting their tan on, students are forced to get their study on, which is a far cry from drinking a piña colada in paradise.Despite basketball, March Madness in Wisconsin can also accurately portray the weather and the emergence of spring. After months of snow, ice and chilling wind, the snow has started to melt, the ice has evaporated and the wind begins to get a little warmer. However, as the old saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather in Wisconsin, wait five minutes.”Now, as March comes to its conclusion, I begin to ponder these two things: Is it still going to snow? And, more importantly, I can’t remember the last time I played a round of golf. Playing golf in the crisp morning air is one of the best recreational and healthiest activities around. For most golfers, the season ended in early November, which means those new Titleist clubs with the super flex shafts have been collecting dust in the basement for more than four months. Every time it seems like you can rush out and practice chipping in the front yard, the Wisconsin weather gods quickly dump three feet of snow and ice in your yard, telling you that it’s time to go back to your studies because it’s not time to lace up those leather golf shoes just yet.Sure, there are other sporting events to pass the time. The Wisconsin softball team overcame a six-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to shock Loyola Tuesday, and the women’s basketball team advanced to the WNIT Final Four for the first time in seven years. But since you can’t steal second base like Sam Polito, and Rae Lin D’Alie can break your ankles with a sly crossover, you’re forced to watch from the sidelines. With golf, you can go out there and play like Tiger Woods and win a major championship. But for most of us, scoring a Jean Van de Velde-like triple bogey is about the best you can hope for.Along with the golfers, the winter is just as harsh on the caddies. For most caddies, myself included, caddying is the major means of income over the year. Without golf, we slowly watch our bank accounts whittle away while our debts increase. I don’t know about the caddies living the dream in the Evans Scholar house, but I have (in order of importance) Wisconsin football tickets, poker losses and, oh yeah, tuition fees to pay for. You might say, ‘Well Benjamin, why don’t you get another job over the winter to pay your bills?’ My response can be simply put as, “If you take my finite mathematics exam, I’ll be happy to search for employment opportunities to pay the bills.”Over the winter months, diehard golfers try to maintain focus on work and business, but often find themselves daydreaming about just how much fun this season is going to be compared to last. It’s a fact, and it’s the true meaning of March Madness. Why do we do it, putting ourselves through the madness over a simple game? The simple conclusion is that golf is the ultimate sport for all ages and sexes (the debate on whether golf is a sport or not will be left for another time). Golf is the type of game that takes very little skill, but good weather to thoroughly enjoy. With April comes that glimmer of hope that the crummy weather should be gone for good and that golf season can begin. It’s just a matter of time until the links are crowded once again, and that lovely beverage cart girl makes her way around to quench my Gatorade thirst for another year. Name one other sport that has all that. After five months of miserable weather, April Madness can finally erupt, as golfers can no longer be contained inside as they dive deep into their closets, looking for their plaid pants and polo shirts. As for me, I think it’s almost that time to strap on the caddie vest for another year, because, lets be honest, I really need the money.Spring is in the air, folks. Let the April Madness — the real month of insanity — finally begin.Benjamin is a senior majoring in Journalism and Bracketology, although he’s choosing to take advantage of the weather and hit the links instead of the Final Four. Manchester United 2006-07Premier League record after 14 games: W11 D2 L1 F30 A7 Pts 35Having been left for dead by Chelsea in the previous campaign, there were few expectations United would become front-runners, but Alex Ferguson’s side took the title race by the scruff of the neck with 11 wins in their first 14 games. United’s early-season form showcased the nascent partnership between Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, whose goals would fire the club to three successive Premier League titles and Champions League glory in 2008. United finished the 2006-07 season six points clear of Chelsea, who suffered the indignity of having to offer their rivals a guard of honour when they hosted Ferguson’s men on the season’s penultimate weekend.Manchester City 2011-12Premier League record after 14 games: W12 D2 L0 F48 A13 Pts 38The only team to have outscored Guardiola’s City at this stage of a Premier League season, Roberto Mancini’s side made a blistering start to the campaign, averaging 3.43 goals per game in their first 14 matches. The centrepiece of that run was a seismic 6-1 victory away to defending champions Manchester United in the October, which was their derby foes’ worst home defeat since February 1955. It left City five points clear of United at the top of the table, but a spring surge by United took the title race right to the wire. Mancini’s men ultimately prevailed on goal difference courtesy of Sergio Aguero’s immortal stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day.Manchester City 2017-18Premier League record after 14 games: W13 D1 L0 F44 A9 Pts 40Guardiola’s City are the first Premier League team to have amassed 40 points in their first 14 games, their sparkling sequence of victories featuring a 6-0 win at Watford, a 7-2 annihilation of Watford and 5-0 thrashings of Liverpool and Crystal Palace. Spearheaded by Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane, they have not dropped points since a 1-1 draw with Everton on August 21. Eight points clear of Manchester United, the title seems to beckon and if they win their next two games — at home to West Ham United and away to Manchester United — they will set a new record for successive victories within the same English top-flight campaign.Share on: WhatsApp London, United Kingdom | AFP | Manchester City’s dramatic 2-1 win over Southampton on Wednesday restored their eight-point lead at the Premier League summit and further enhanced their status as overwhelming title favourites.Pep Guardiola’s sparkling team have smashed record after record since the start of the season and are currently on a 19-game winning streak in all competitions. But how do they match up against teams who have made similarly impressive starts to a Premier League campaign?Arsenal 2003-04Premier League record after 14 games: W10 D4 L0 F28 A10 Pts 34One of the most feted teams in the history of English football, Arsene Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ became the first side since Preston North End in 1889 to complete a top-flight season unbeaten. After 14 games of the 2003-04 campaign Arsenal were actually second in the table behind Chelsea, who had flown out of the blocks under Claudio Ranieri. But Chelsea wilted during the English winter, winning only three of their next eight games, and Arsenal, inspired by Thierry Henry, stormed past to glory.Chelsea 2005-06Premier League record after 14 games: W12 D1 L1 F33 A7 Pts 37Chelsea took England by storm in Jose Mourinho’s first season as manager in 2004-05, finishing 12 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table, and they picked up where they had left off the following campaign. Mourinho’s men won their first nine games and although Manchester United beat them 1-0 in early November, Chelsea were 10 points above them — having played a game more — after 14 matches. Chelsea responded to the defeat against United with a salvo of 10 successive wins and finished eight points clear at the top despite losing their last two matches.

I had stopped watching the game when Liverpool went one up,” said Opiyo. The giant jackpot was paid out by Kenyan betting firm SportPesa. Last May the company paid another jackpot worth 221 million shillings.Smartphones have brought sports betting to a new generation of Kenyans, with SportPesa leading the charge. The final prediction that sealed his good fortune was Sunday’s 2-2 draw between Spurs and Liverpool, in which midfielder and Kenyan captain Wanyama scored the first equaliser at Anfield to keep Tottenham — and Opiyo — in contention.
By Rich ChrampanisLINCROFT – As he stood at midcourt soaking in the applause of the home crowd following his record setting shot, it would have been perfectly acceptable for Pat Andree to take a moment and realize what he accomplished. After all, with names like John Crotty, Bob Roma and his head coach, Geoff Billet, on the list of all-time CBA greats, the fact that Andree stood above them all as the Colts all-time leading scorer afforded him the chance to think about what he has accomplished.Instead, Andree and his coach stared straight into the cameras not even flashing a grin. At the time of his record setting shot, the outcome of the game was still in doubt against the Howell Rebels. It’s this mindset and attitude that is the exact reason that Pat Andree will forever be a part of CBA’s rich basketball history.Andree needed 23 points to surpass the legendary Bob Roma as the Colts top scorer in history heading into the Howell game. With 15 points at the half, Andree opened the third quarter with three straight three pointers to get him to 1,672 career points. His record setting triple put the Colts ahead 44-42 and once the moment happened, the entire CBA team seemed to breathe a collective sigh of relief and went on to a comfortable 69-52 win over the Rebels.Following the game, Andree did take the time to smile and appreciate what he accomplished, but on a day where all the media wanted him to talk about was himself, he still made it about the team.“This is actually a team achievement for me because all the guys I’ve played with over the last three years helped me get here. This was not just me,” Andree said. The forward then went on to illustrate his point by describing the three point shot that gave him the record. “The way I got it was a wide open look from a great rebound from my teammate. I’m just capitalizing on the hard work of my teammates who got me the ball.”Towering over the majority of his competition at 6-foot-8, Andree can dominate in the paint with polished moves in the post and the basketball IQ to get great looks. But what makes him one of the all-time greats in CBA history is his total game. His ability to shoot three pointers is astonishing; you don’t expect to see a big man have the kind of range that is reserved for shooting guards. Just as impressive is his ability to distribute the basketball with the kind of no-look passes that you would normally see from an elite point guard.“He’s the whole package – student, person, family. He’s the type of kid we want representing our school and our basketball program,” coach Geoff Billet said. “The points are great and I’m very happy that he got the record and is well deserving, but he’s become such a well rounded player and he’s worked so hard to do that. It’s been fun watching him develop over the past four years.”The “Colt Crazies” show their appreciation to Pat Andree after he surpassed Bob Roma as the top scorer in CBA history. The development will continue in the Patriot League when Pat begins his college basketball career playing for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. He chose to head to Pennsylvania over five other Division I offers including George Washington University in the higher profile Atlantic 10.“I can tell it’s just a great team, they all love each other, a bunch of brothers just like CBA,” Andree said. “Just to get up there, I’m very excited, but first I want to win a Shore Conference championship and win a state title.”The climb to the top of CBA immortality is an arduous one, which makes the fact that Andree’s wide open three to set the record is a little bit ironic. The good news for Colts basketball supporters is that Pat Andree isn’t done climbing. Perhaps the greatest part of his legacy is the fact that this humble and quiet superstar isn’t a “me” guy. The talk of records and accomplishments will most likely happen at CBA reunions and just like on the day he set the mark, it will be other people asking him the questions. In the halls of the Lincroft campus, the name Pat Andree will be talked about right alongside the all time greats from over six decades of championship.

Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest A long-awaited regulation, which would offer contract farmers more protections in the marketplace, has seen a renewed commitment from the nation’s capital. In a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack, eight champions for farmers recently reiterated their support to move forward with implementation of the Grain Inspection and Stockyards Protection Administration (GIPSA) rule — an effort that National Farmers Union was quick to applaud.“Producers and consumers alike benefit from competitive and transparent markets… Deceptive, fraudulent, retaliatory, and anti-competitive practices have no place in a well-functioning market, and we need to have sound rules of the road to protect consumers, livestock producers and poultry growers in increasingly concentrated market environments,” the lawmakers stated in the letter. The GIPSA rule was included in the 2008 Farm Bill to mitigate abusive contracting and marketing practices in the highly concentrated livestock and poultry sectors. However, lawmakers repeatedly blocked the USDA from actually implementing the law through an annual appropriations rider until late last year when that rider was omitted from the congressional appropriations omnibus bill.USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Ed Avalos agreed to take “a very well-balanced approach” to finalizing the GIPSA rule during his testimony today before the House Agriculture Committee. Secretary Vilsack delivered a similar message at the NFU annual convention last week, when he said finishing work on the GIPSA rule would be a priority during the remainder of his tenure.“We are pleased to see the progress and commitment towards implementation of the GIPSA regulations,” NFU President Roger Johnson said. “Our family farmers and ranchers are competing in an increasingly more concentrated market. These regulations will protect growers during contract disputes and help level the playing field.”Johnson said that NFU will continue to work closely with USDA throughout the process to finalize the rule.
To push its demand for special category status for Odisha, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is planning to join hands with the YSR Congress and the JD(U) in Parliament and raise their voice together. The Chief Ministers of Odisha, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh – Naveen Patnaik of BJD, Nitish Kumar of JD(U) and Y S Jaganmohan Reddy of YSR Congress – have been demanding special category status for their respective State. The BJD, JD(U) and the YSR Congress have substantial presence in Lok Sabha with 12, 16 and 22 members respectively. While the JD(U) is part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the BJD and the YSR Congress are not aligned with any bloc. “Though the idea is in nascent stage, we are in favour of making a move with other Parties in order to make an impact in the Parliament,” BJD Parliamentary Party leader and Puri MP Pinaki Mishra told PTI. Mr. Mishra said it is better to raise the demand in a big way in the Parliament along with the MPs of both YSR Congress and JD(U). “All together, the three regional Parties have 50 MPs in the Lok Sabha and a good number in Rajya Sabha. If we are fighting for a common demand, what is wrong in joining hands and making our voice louder in the Parliament,” Mr. Mishra asked. Replying to a question on whether his Party has started any move to unite the two other like-minded Parties in the struggle for the special category status, Mr. Mishra said, “Not so far. But there is no harm in making an effort. Let the first session of the Parliament begin. We will make a move taking other Parties into confidence.” Mr. Mishra also appealed to all MPs from Odisha, irrespective of their Party affiliation, to join hands and demand special category status for Odisha, which has been frequently hit by natural calamities. Earlier this week, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged him to include natural calamity as an indicator for getting special category status. Since then, Mr. Patnaik urged Mr. Modi to consider ‘Special Focus State’ status to the calamity-hit States and allow them to get the benefits being availed by the States categorised as the special category States. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been raising the demand for special category status for the State for a long time. He had organised public meetings in support of the demand in Patna and New Delhi too in the past. The YSR Congress is also seeking special category status for Andhra Pradesh.
